Mildred Louise (nee Jones) Smoot, 97, passed away Monday evening, October 30, 2023 at Westminster Village, after an extended illness.
She was born in rural Grant County, near Matthews, Indiana, on February 16, 1926, being one of five children born to Clarence J. and Nora E. (nee Dawson) Jones. She was a 1944 graduate of Eaton High School and married Roll E. Smoot, Jr. on August 30, 1946.
Mildred graduated from Ball State University in 1964 and spent fifteen years as an elementary school teacher in Gaston and Eaton, Indiana. She was a life member and devoted to her church, Eaton United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Eaton Wednesday Afternoon Club, Young Hearts Club (42nd Home Demonstration Club), the Delaware Co. Retired Teachers Association, TREES (The Retirees of Eaton Elementary School), was a fifty-year member of the Upland O.E.S. as well as the former Eaton Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #522.
In addition to spending twenty-one years, wintering in Arizona, Mildred enjoyed traveling, visiting all 48 States of the continental U.S. She was an avid reader. She loved doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed crocheting.
She leaves behind two daughters: Julia (Mike) Shaw and Melanie (Chris) Fancher. Five grandchildren: Tiffini (Doug) Wagner, Trent (Maggie) Shaw, Kelly (Shane) Screnock, Meredith Hargis and Jill Fancher. Eight, great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-eight years, on April 28, 2005; three brothers: Rev. John Paul Jones, Max W. Jones, David M. Jones and her sister, Martha Day.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3rd, at Pitman-Richman Funeral Home, 200 S. Hartford St., Eaton, with her nephew, Keith Jones officiating. Burial will be held privately by her family.
Visitation will be on Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service.
