Alice J. Gillis, 81, long-time biology teacher and current farmer and Delaware Community Schools School Board member, died on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at her home.
Alice was born in Hartford City on April 15,1943 to Edgar F. and Elsie H. (Tilmans) Gillis. She was a 1961 graduate of Eaton High School. Following that she earned her B.S. in Biology and English in 1964 from Ball State Teachers College along with a Masters Degree in Biology as well from Ball State in 1967. Alice also completed post-graduate education at the University of Maryland and the University of Colorado in the field of genetics.
Alice taught biology for many years at Lewis Cass High School in Walton, Indiana, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed coaching softball and was also the cheer block sponsor at Lewis Cass. In addition, she was very active in 4H in Delaware County. For the past 34 years she, along with Sherry Garland, operated Pumpkin Acres, selling pumpkins and Halloween decorations.
Alice is survived by her teammate, Sherry Garland; her sister Elsie (Gillis) Kerr; brother Richard Gillis (Renee); brother-in-law Don Braun; sister-in-law Pat Gillis; as well as several nieces, nephews, and Sherry’s granddaughters and great-grandchildren, and many friends.
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her siblings Edgar F. Gillis, Jr. and Lillian (Gillis) Braun along with her brother-in-law William K. Kerr and nephew Mark Gillis.

Following Alice’s wishes, there will be no public services.
