Byron "Barney" D. Miers Sr., 91, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Albany Health Care with his family by his side.
He was born on October 28, 1924 in Madison County, Indiana to Ralph "Boo" and Mary (Cummins) Miers. He attended school but left early to work on the family farm. There he helped his family until he was drafted into the Army in WWII. In addition to serving his country in the Army, Byron went on to also serve in the Marines.
After the war, Byron returned to Indiana and married Violet Champ and together they would have two sons. Violet passed away in 1969 and later on Byron found companionship with Emmagene Chipps. Byron and Emmagene would live together for the next 30 years and together they raised Emmagene's daughter Melinda, who Byron cared for as his own.
Byron worked part-time as an electrician for I&M and also as a supervisor for BorgWarner retiring in 1975. He is a lifetime member of the Daleville American Legion Post #446, a 62 year member of the Anthony Lodge F&AM, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne.
He is survived by his two sons, Byron "Dean" Miers, Jr. (Darlene), Randall Joe Miers (Cheryl Caldwell), three grandchildren: Lisa Vuurman (David), Jeremy Miers, Jeffrey Scott Miers, three great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Byron was preceded in death by his wife, Violet, granddaughter, Julie Ann Miers, two brothers, Ralph Miers Jr., and Walter S. Miers, three sisters: Edna Mae Rapt, Jane Ann Fink, and Merle Schusty, and his friend and companion Emmagene Chipps.
Funeral services will be held at Pitman-Richman Funeral Home, 200 S. Hartford St., Eaton at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 with Pastor Steve DeLisle officiating. Burial with Military Rites by the Delaware County Honor Guard will follow in Eaton Union Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be at the funeral home from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Monday, September 26 and from 10:00 am until service time, Tuesday.
A Masonic service will be held on Monday at 7:00 pm following visitation.
