Dorothy A. Smoot (age 92) passed away peacefully at her home on October 24, 2023 with family by her side. Dorothy was born June 12, 1931 in rural Daleville, IN. The daughter of the late Alfred and Lottie (Richards) Gilland. Survivors include two sons, Jeffery (LuAnn) Smoot and Rodney (Jan) Smoot both of Eaton; 7 grandchildren, Evan (Kristy) Smoot, Neal (Chelsea) Smoot, Elizabeth (Micheal) May, Seth (Emily) Smoot, Sam Smoot, Sarah Smoot, and Aaron (Chelsea) Smoot; 8 great grandchildren; sister Patricia Evans of Dunkirk and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Smoot, son Gary Smoot, parents Alfred and Lottie (Richards) Gilland, sisters Mary Rose, Elizabeth Pursifull, and Betty Gilland.
She was a graduate of Eaton High School in 1949. She married Robert (Bob) Smoot on August 18, 1951. Dorothy worked at Overhead Door in Hartford City in the Sales Office. She was Deputy Assessor of Niles Township for 20 years. She took over as Trustee-Assessor for her husband following his death in 1986 until she retired in 2018 for a total of 32 years. Dorothy was a member of the ITA Trustee Association, Delaware County Trustee Association, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Women of the Moose #0712 Muncie, North Niles Home Ec Club, American Legion Auxiliary #90, Indiana Farm Bureau, and Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church.
Dorothy loved having her grandchildren, family, and friends around. She also enjoyed watching sports, especially Colts/Cowboys football, IU basketball and Nascar racing.
Funeral services will be at 3:00PM on Monday, October 30, 2023 at Pitman-Richman Funeral Home, Eaton, IN with Pastor Randy Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Eaton, IN. Family and friends may call from 12:00PM - 3:00PM on Monday, October 30,2023.

The Family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Heart to Heart Hospice, and special caregivers Brittany Reynolds, Elizabeth May, Jodi Justice-Konkle, and Jerilyn Justice.
Dorothy grew up as a farmer’s daughter and passed her lifelong love of farming to her family. Her last day on earth her sons and grandsons paid tribute to her by passing by her window with combines, tractors, and trucks as they harvested the soybeans that surrounded her farm. Her legacy will continue to live on for future generations.
