Gary Alexander Obituary

EATON – Gary Lynn Alexander, 76, rural Eaton, died at 9:45 p.m., Sunday, February 7, 2021 at IU Health, Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana.

Gary was born in Delaware County, Muncie, Indiana on May 20, 1944, the son of Russell Lowell Alexander and Mary Ellen (Burt) Alexander.  Gary graduated from Royerton High School with the Class of 1962.  He furthered his education at Purdue University and Ball State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1968. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.  Gary married Julie (Love) Alexander in 1965 while both Gary and Julie were in college. They continued to live in Indiana until 1969 when they moved to Columbus, Ohio to begin their first careers in pharmaceutical sales/real estate sales and elementary education, respectively.  In July of 1978, they moved back to Delaware County where they purchased the family farm near Eaton and are still there after 43 years.

Gary’s professional career in Indiana included Farming, Real Estate Broker, and Real Estate Appraiser.  He opened his own Real Estate Appraisal Office in Muncie.  He retired in 2009 when his son, Scott, was able to continue with the Alexander & Company Real Estate Appraisers, Inc. 1600 W. Riggin Rd., Muncie.

Gary loved farming and just being outside in the country.  He cared about the environment, gardening, and taking care of the animals.  On his 70th birthday he got his best animal friend, Bella, a rat terrier puppy that followed him around everywhere and sat on his lap every chance she got.  He appreciated his retirement and the extra time it gave him to do the things he enjoyed. He was an honorary crew member of Meg’s Country Celebrations. For those of you who knew Gary, you know that he had a great passion for the Purdue Boilermakers! His “buddies” group of six high school classmates, played golf weekly when they could and enjoyed a 3-day golf outing with their wives for many years. (The guys golfed and the gals shopped and explored.) They also vacationed together when they could.

Gary’s greatest love was his family.  He is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Dr. Julie Alexander;  4 children, son, Scott (wife, Valerie) Alexander, rural Eaton;  daughter, Stephanie (husband, Jeff Welch) Minneola, Florida; son, Benjamin (wife, Amber) Alexander, Hartford City; and daughter, Megan Alexander, rural Eaton;  Gary’s sister, Mary Ann (husband, Kin) Kinlaw of Atlanta, Georgia;  Gary’s brother, Dan (wife, Cathy) Alexander, rural Eaton;  10 grandchildren who affectionately knew him as “Poppy”:  Devin Welch, Aliyah Alexander, Kayleigh Clevenger, Josslyn Clevenger, Taylor Garcia, Kylie Welch, Katie Alexander, Johnathan Alexander, Nicholas Alexander, and Andrew Alexander.  Gary loved God and had talked with all of his family about going to church and getting to know God.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Lowell Alexander (2009) and Mary Ellen Alexander (2004); and his brother, Thomas Alexander (1987).

Our family would like to extend a thank you to the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel who took such good care of Gary while he was in the hospital, and kept us so well informed.  The “face times” were such a blessing.
