Harold Cross Obituary

Harold L. Cross, 92, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024, at his daughter Julia’s home, surrounded by family.

Harold was born on November 17, 1931, in Bedford, Indiana to Fred and Lillie (Waskom) Cross. He was a 1950 graduate of Eaton High School and served his country in the Marine Corps.  On May 7, 1952, he married Janet Cruea and together they would raise their two daughters, LuAnne and Julia, in Eaton.

Harold worked as a supervisor at 3M, for 30 years. He was a member of Eaton First Church of God. He found great joy in preparing breakfast for the men’s prayer group that welcomed other local community members, as well as youth. He was a founder and co-owner of Lakeview Country Club in Eaton. He helped build and design the course from his 200 acre family farm. Harold was a board member of Delaware Community School Corporation, and a member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM Anthony Lodge #171.

As a young boy, Harold learned to play music by ear. He played harmonica, banjo, piano, organ, accordion, and fiddle. Harold enjoyed bowling in numerous leagues, where he obtained the nickname “Hoppy” from the way he hopped when he delivered the ball. He liked fishing with family and friends on West Lake in Woodland Park, Michigan, and his favorite was night fishing in East Lake in the cove just beyond the “old witch” tree. The story is- the biggest fish he ever caught was a 5 ½ lb bass with his grandson and brother in law. Harold loved golfing and giving tips to anyone. Harold prided in mowing the greens at 4:00 am every morning. Although, the most important and special thing was spending time with his family and being involved in his grandkids and great grandkids lives. Together, Harold and his wife Janet, loved to socialize with family and friends playing games, eating, and traveling.

Harold is survived by his wife of 72 years, Janet Cross; two daughters: LuAnne Porter (Marvin) and Julia Wood (Robin); five grandchildren: Holly Supan (Tony), Hilary Miller, Corbin Black, Maggie Black (Skyler Stephans), and Gracie Crouch (Wesley); bonus grandchildren: Catherine Hill (Michael), Leah Harrell (Aaron), Brady Wood (Alicia), and Annie Bell (James); 16 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold Cross, and Glenn Cross.

To all his family and friends, Harold will be remembered for his bold personality, huge bear hugs, giving advice, remembering every detail about everything, generosity, faith and over the top sense of humor.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2024 at Eaton Church of God, 700 E Harris St.,Eaton with his son-in-law, Pastor Robin Wood and Glenn Greiner officiating.
