Janna Hollowell Obituary

Eaton, IN

Janna Sue Hollowell (Bixler) passed away peacefully at University Nursing Center on February 19, 2024 due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. She was loved by all who knew her including her husband of 60 years, Fred (George) Hollowell; daughters Diane Weaver, (Don), Kim Simon (Joe), and Andrea Hall; four grandchildren - Rachel Lunsford (Tim), Becca Stout (Shannon), Joshua Weaver (Stephanie), Ezra Hall, Michael Wright and Timmy Wright; plus eight great-grandchildren – Everett & Malcus Schmidt, Keegan Lunsford, Addison Dinse, Penelope & Maxwell Weaver, and Ava & Mason Wright; nephew Steve Michaels (Kay) and niece, Jana Chirico (David); and step grandson, Will Simon. Janna was preceded in death by her parents Perry & Mae (Dugan) Bixler, her sister, Nancy Cunningham and son-in-law, Dave Wright.

Janna was born in Oakland City, IN on August 24, 1943, and spent her early childhood in Pike County (Indiana) before moving with her family to Royerton, IN. Janna survived polio as a child and credited her recovery to her father Perry (a Phys Ed teacher) who provided intense physical therapy and her mother, Mae, who spent hours applying “hot packs” to Janna’s body to relieve pain. Janna graduated from Eaton High School in 1962 and married Fred Hollowell on March 16, 1963, at the Eaton United Methodist church. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Ball State University. After graduation, Janna taught History and English at Eaton High School and later went on to receive her Master of Counseling degree from Ball State.

Janna devoted her life to her family, church, and all the students that passed through Daleville Jr./Sr. High School where she worked as the school guidance counselor for 18 years before retiring in 2005. Her passion was helping and serving others and she took so much pride in finding and loving “the underdogs” and the ones that the world viewed as unlovable. Janna always had a listening ear and was the biggest cheerleader for so many people. She loved unconditionally and always took an interest in what others were doing.

In addition to her career, she spent her time actively serving her church family. Janna had been a member of the Eaton United Methodist church, where she led the Methodist Women’s group, taught Sunday school, and served as VBS director for many years. She and Fred also later served at Agape Ministries (now Community church) helping coordinate Fellowship dinners and the annual Harvest stew. Janna loved creating themes and decorations for the dinners and went out of her way to make even simple activities special.

Janna’s talents extended beyond the school and church walls. Her Apple cake is world-renowned (once making its way from Eaton to British Columbia, Canada!). She found joy in painting, gardening, and birdwatching but perhaps her favorite activity was walking along Ft. Myers beach with Fred and looking for shells.

Janna lived her life following her favorite Bible verse, 1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” For those of us who knew and loved her, she embodied this verse to its fullest and has inspired all of us to do the same.
